High School Credit: CTE credit or elective credit: up to 4 credits
Concurrent Enrollment: 3 college credits. Student is responsible for registering and paying for concurrent enrollment classes at SLCC. For information on these classes, see Appendix.
Industry Certifications: NCCT National Medical Assistant Certification. NCCT National Phlebotomy Technician Certification.
Skills Certifications: Utah State Skills Certificate Tests, Utah State Medical Assistant Endorsement
Recommended: This is a full-year course in which students attend every day. A GPA of 3.0 is recommended for this course. Science classes such as anatomy, physiology, biology, chemistry, and physics can help, but are not required.
Required: For students to complete externships, they MUST be seniors while attending the class. Students MUST have completed all required immunizations, a background check, and pass a urine drug screening.
Additional Opportunities: Students can participate in HOSA.
Course Descriptions
Medical Assistant:
Students will become proficient in medical front-office skills, such as scheduling appointments and maintaining patient records. Learn clinical skills such as measuring vital signs, documenting in the medical record, assisting with minor surgical procedures, performing phlebotomy, administering medications, performing Basic Medical Laboratory Procedures, and performing EKGs.
HS 1100 / Medical Terminology:
Course format is lecture supplemented with videos and discussion covering more than 350 medical word roots, suffixes, and prefixes. Emphasis is placed on pronunciation, spelling, and proper usage of medical terms. Medical abbreviations are also introduced.
Medical Anatomy and Physiology:
Learn the structure and function of the systems of the body and how diseases and disorders affect these systems.
Health Science Capstone:
This course is designed to prepare students for careers in healthcare. The course will help students gain professional skills needed, understand the healthcare system, and attain the knowledge required to excel in the healthcare field.
