Program Overview

The CIC Cosmetology Program is a hands-on, career-focused experience where students turn creativity and passion for beauty into real professional skills. Through a comprehensive and engaging curriculum, students work with real clients, earn college credit, and build confidence in a supportive salon environment while still in high school. With rigorous training aligned to industry standards, students graduate prepared for licensure and ready to step directly into the beauty industry or advanced education opportunities.

What you'll Learn

Students will develop technical skills in hair cutting, styling, coloring, chemical texturizing, skin care, and nail services through daily hands-on practice in a working salon environment. They will learn and consistently apply industry standards for safety, sanitation, client consultation, and professional communication. The program also emphasizes time management, retailing, and business fundamentals as students manage appointments and interact with real clients. Students should be prepared for a rigorous schedule, including daily class attendance, evening salon hours, and a commitment to completing required clock hours and service counts for licensure.

Additional Details:

High School Credit: CTE credit or elective credit: up to 4.5 credits total.

Additional Classes Available: After completing their first semester, students may attend two evening sessions per week to earn additional clock hours and service counts beyond the regular school day. A summer session is also available for students who wish to continue building hours and service counts toward licensure.

Concurrent Enrollment: 44 elective college credits available. Student is required to register and pay for concurrent enrollment classes with USU-Eastern. 

Industry Certifications: State of Utah DOPL: Utah Cosmetology Licensing Exams, NIC Exam Eligibility

Skills Certifications: CIC Cosmetology Program Completion Certificate

Recommended: Success in this program is supported by strong hand-eye coordination; an interest in color theory and design; basic geometry and math skills; logical problem-solving; professional communication and customer service skills; and the ability to remain focused, follow directions, and manage time effectively. 

Program Requirements: Students and a parent or guardian are required to attend a program orientation meeting. A minimum 2.0 GPA, as required by USU, must be met at the time of application. Students must demonstrate professionalism and a willingness to work with the public by performing services on clients and participating as models during instructional practice.

Program Completion Requirements: Complete 1,600 clock hours, fulfill state-required service counts, successfully complete the program, and pass the state N.I.C. examinations.

Additional Opportunities: Students are encouraged to broaden their experience through SkillsUSA competition, meaningful service learning projects, and direct engagement with industry professionals, strengthening both technical skills and career readiness.
