Program Overview

This EMT course provides students with insights into the theory and application of concepts related to the profession of emergency medical services.

What you'll Learn

Specific topics include EMS preparatory, airway management, patient assessment, management of trauma patients, management of medical patients, treating infants and children, and various EMS operations. The course is based on the NHTSA Emergency Services Education Standards, National Registry of EMT’s, and ATTA Guidelines. It is highly recommended that students in this program have at least a 2.0 GPA due to the rigorous academic requirements. Throughout the program, students are continuously evaluated on their knowledge and skills. Through classroom discussions, lectures, and hands-on practice, students will build the confidence and competence needed for success. These methods are designed using National EMS education guidelines to prepare students thoroughly for the NREMT examinations. Students who successfully pass the written exam and demonstrate adequate critical decision making, will advance to the National Registry psychomotor (practical) skills testing. After successfully completing both the written and practical components, candidates may be recommended and must schedule their National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) cognitive exam through a Pearson VUE testing center. Upon successful completion of all program requirements and instructor recommendation, students become eligible for EMT licensure through the State of Utah and certification through the NREMT. Both the NREMT certification and Utah EMS licensure must be renewed every two years.

Additional Details:

High School Credit: CTE credit or elective credit: 2 credits total 

Concurrent Enrollment: 9 college credits. Student is responsible to register and pay for concurrent enrollment classes at UVU. For more information on these classes, see Appendix.

Industry Certifications: NREMT Psychomotor and Cognitive Exams, NREMT Certification and Utah license 

Skills Certifications: Utah State Skills Certificate Tests

Recommended: Biology, Medical Anatomy and Physiology, Medical Terminology

Required: Must be a senior to attend this class. It is strongly recommended that students have current immunizations including the Hepatitis A and B series and current TB. Students must provide their own transportation to all clinical sessions. Students must be able to drag 125 pounds and lift 50 pounds.

ESEC 1140/Emergency Medical Technician 1:

Our exciting, yet demanding course will be taught through didactic lecture, hands on demonstration and practical application settings. Reading assignments and bookwork will be part of this program. The EMT candidate must maintain 80% on every assignment and test or better in order to take all required exams. Candidates will need to be competent in their skills and knowledge and will be evaluated throughout the program. As we spend time in discussions, class lectures and implementing those tools through practice, the students will become knowledgeable, confident, and competent. These techniques will help the student prepare for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) exams.
