High School Credit: CTE credit or elective credit: up to 2 credits
Concurrent Enrollment: 5 college credits. Student is responsible to register and pay for concurrent enrollment classes at SLCC. For more information on these classes, see Appendix.
SLCC Recommendation: Minimum 3.0 GPA
Industry Certifications: Utah State Nurse Assistant Certification Exams – Knowledge and Skills.
Skills Certifications: Utah State Skills Certificate Tests, BLS CPR, 1st Aid
Recommended: Biology, Health Occupations, Medical Anatomy and Physiology, and Health Science.
Required: Excellent attendance. If a student misses more than 9 days, they may be ineligible for certification testing at semester’s end. Students must attend one clinical session each week, above and beyond class time. Must have current immunizations: Hepatitis B series, Tuberculosis (TB) skin test, Tdap, Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR), Flu, and Varicella. Students must pass a urine drug screening, and complete a background check.
Additional Opportunities: Students can participate in HOSA.
Course Descriptions
HS 1100 / Medical Terminology:
Course format is lecture supplemented with videos and discussion covering more than 350 medical word roots, suffixes, and prefixes. Emphasis is placed on pronunciation, spelling, and proper usage of medical terms. Medical abbreviations are also introduced.
HLTH 1200 / Emergency Medical Response:
The American Red Cross Responding to Emergencies course teaches students how to recognize and respond to cardiac, breathing, and first aid emergencies. It combines lectures, videos, and hands-on practice to build the skills needed to provide immediate care and make critical decisions until professional help arrives. Students have the opportunity to receive a BLS CPR and 1st Aid certification.
Nurse Assisting:
This course prepares students for entry-level roles as a nurse assistant by combining classroom instruction with hands-on clinical skills practice. Students learn how to provide safe, compassionate care, with an emphasis on infection control, communication, and maintaining professionalism in healthcare settings. Upon completion, students may begin working in long-term care facilities, assisted living and memory care locations, hospitals, and other healthcare environments.
