Additional Details:
High School Credit: CTE credit or elective credit: up to 4 credits
Concurrent Enrollment: 3 College Credits. Student is responsible to register and pay for concurrent enrollment classes at SLCC.
Industry Certifications: National Pharmacy Technician Certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), Utah State Pharmacy Technician License through the Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL).
Skills Certifications: Utah State Skills Certificate Tests
Recommended: Chemistry and high school math proficiency. 3.0 or higher cumulative high school GPA.
Required: Students MUST complete a background check and pass a urine drug screening to be in the pharmacy technician program. Students may be required to complete additional vaccinations depending on pharmacy externship site requirements.
Additional Opportunities: Students can participate in HOSA.
Course Descriptions
MA 1100 Medical Terminology:
Students will become proficient in medical front-office skills, such as scheduling appointments and maintaining patient records. Learn clinical skills such as measuring vital signs, documenting in the medical record, assisting with minor surgical procedures, performing phlebotomy, administering medications, performing Basic Medical Laboratory Procedures, and performing EKGs.
Pharmacy Technician:
This year-long course provides training for students to prepare to take the national certification exam. Students will learn patient data collection and recording, medication processing, medication order preparation, and inventory management. Emphasis will be placed on pharmacy laws and regulations, as well as proper work-place safety and sanitization.
Health Science Capstone:
This is a semester course designed to prepare students for a health science career. Students will participate in work-based learning experiences designed to introduce and research different health science careers.
